WWE’s first openly gay female superstar and a known advocate for LGBT+ rights, Sonya Deville, hopes to see representation in a WWE storyline someday.

During a recent interview with Allure, Deville discussed her goal to bring authentic representation to mainstream wrestling. She has spoken with GLAAD and WWE in hopes of creating a positive working relationship.

Due to the company’s history of problematic gay storylines, Deville believes there is room for inclusion, but it must be done the right way.

“I’ve been talking with GLAAD and WWE over the past two years and really have developed a great relationship between the three of us,” she said. “I am a firm supporter and believer that it’s important to have that inclusion in our programming in the right, most appropriate, tasteful way. I realized — and I think I learned this at a young age — that anything that’s worth anything, you’re going to take a risk to get there and it’s not going to be easy. If you’re getting hate along the way I think that means that you’re doing something right and that you’re creating change,”

Deville also realizes that any potential storyline could ignite some backlash. However, she is ready for that because she believes “anything that’s worth anything, you’re going to take a risk to get there and it’s not going to be easy.”

“By doing this, yeah, I would be putting myself out there and I would be almost like the guinea pig for this kind of revolution,” she said. “But I am willing to do something like that to make a social change and to really pioneer this movement in the right direction. Somebody has to do it, right?”

Genuine LGBT+ representation is the logical next in the “Women’s Revolution.” If WWE wants to make legitimate changes, they should attempt to create characters that represent women of all walks of life.
