Yesterday, WWE released information about the travel packages for Royal Rumble, but NXT TakeOver was notably missing from the schedule. It would seem the network exclusive event won’t be a part of the weekend’s festivities.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, “WWE has confirmed that the travel package listing was not an error and that a Worlds Collide event is taking place on that day instead of TakeOver. In regard to the future of NXT TakeOver events, WWE said in a statement that the schedule of the 2020 NXT TakeOver Events will be out in the near future.”
Worlds Collide was a part of this year’s Royal Rumble weekend as well, but it wasn’t promoted as heavily. The event featured superstars from 205 Live, NXT and NXT in a two-day tournament, that granted the winner a shot at the title of their choice.
This is an interesting decision because NXT TakeOver has become such a big part of the weekend surrounding WWE’s “Big Four” pay-per-view events. On the other hand, this could be a good way to highlight mid-card talent who may not have gotten the same opportunity otherwise.
For example, this year Mia Yim and Taynara Conti faced Chelsea Green and Vanessa Borne in a tag match. Albeit, it was a dark match, but this could be a way to present some dream matches we wouldn’t get to see on NXT or NXT UK.
