Taya Valkyrie and Tessa Blanchard’s rivalry endures with AAA

Two weeks ago, Taya Valkyrie said: “It’s rare that you find someone that truly is the yin to your yang, that lights a fire of motivation in you, drives you to the limit and sets free a story that can be told over and over again.” She went on to say Tessa Blanchard is that kind of rival for her.

The two wrestled for the first time last January and since they have faced each other over a dozen times. This Sunday, they will stand toe-to-toe again at AAA Invading NY at the Hulu Theater inside Madison Square Garden.

Blanchard will defend her newly won Reina de Reinas Championship against the current Impact Knockouts Champion.

Last month at TripleMania XXVII, Tessa Blanchard met Valkyrie at the top of the ladder in a TLC match to determine the new champion. There were five other women in the match, but it was a safe bet that it would come down to them.

The two Knockouts stars engaged in a desperate exchange that was just as heated as you would expect given their history together. When Blanchard finally fought her off to claim her prize, it wasn’t hard to tell this was far from over.

After all, “La Wera Loca,” a two-time Reina de Reinas Champion, still has a legitimate claim to the title. She never lost the championship, as it was vacated after a sordid situation that led to her messy exit from the company in 2017.

She returned to AAA as representative for IMPACT in October of 2018. However, she hasn’t been able to regain the title yet.

Blanchard has some unfinished business of her own, following their feud for the Knockouts Championship. Valkyrie initially challenged her for the title at Bound for Glory XIV, but she retained with the use of a leveraged pin. She narrowly defeated her a second time before Gail Kim got involved.

Kim helped Taya win, and become the new champion, as a special guest referee at Homecoming. Valkyrie has held the title for 250 days after she successfully defended the title against Tessa in a street fight at Uncaged in February.

The bout, which featured some crazy chair and table spots, is regarded as one of the best matches of the year.

Throughout 2019, they have crossed paths at other promotions, but their clash this weekend will probably be the most high-profile one-on-one match since Uncaged. It’s a little surprising that it didn’t happen sooner, but with all the elements in place, the storylines practically write themselves.

Every battle they’ve had together over the past year and a half will culminate in a title match, where they both still have so much to prove. Blanchard doesn’t want to walk away empty-handed after her first title defense. While Valkyrie still wants to reclaim what was seemingly taken from her two years ago.

One thing is for certain. Taya Valkyrie vs. Tessa Blanchard for the Reina de Reinas Championship will be a must-see event. AAA Invading NY will air live this Sunday, Sept. 15 on Fite.tv and on pay-per-view via your cable and satellite tv provider.
