Chronicle recounts Sasha Banks’ emotional trek back to WWE

The newest episode of WWE Chronicle premiered last night. It focused on Sasha Banks, who opened about what sparked her hiatus and triumphant return to the company.

It began with Banks explaining how wrestling saved her life because WWE programming acted as a refuge for her growing up. This rather eloquently transitioned into her struggle with depression and her abrupt departure back in April.

She explained that wrestling was all she knew, and she needed to take a break to rediscover herself. Banks admitted it all started after the situation with Paige, who suffered a neck injury after a misplaced kick from Sasha at a house show in Uniondale, NY on Dec. 27, 2017.

The injury ultimately forced to retire from in-ring competition last year. Banks revealed the incident made her question herself. “That really sucked,” she said. “Having fans like destroy me. Destroy my work. I pride myself on my work so much and I would never intentionally hurt anyone.”

She also divulged that she had “zero feeling” going out for WrestleMania this year and she had never felt that way. That’s when she knew she was done.

Her best friend, Bayley, and husband, Mikaze, both fully supported her decision to leave because they could see she was unhappy. In the months that followed, she took part in therapy, meditation, crystal healing, and even visited a psychic. More importantly, Banks did things that made her happy.

She eventually addressed the infamous rumors surrounding her exit and put them to rest for good.

“Yeah, at first it really bothered me,” she said. “It really bothered me because it was the same feeling how I felt when that Paige stuff happened. Just like, man, you guys don’t know the full story. You don’t know the full thing and then, just like how the hell do they make this stuff up too? I saw so much stuff like ‘crying on the floor of the locker room.’ No, I got undressed, put my clothes on and walked out and stand with the fans with Pam watching the main event, because I was so happy for those girls.”

This documentary touched on some dark subjects like depression, but it was also insightful and inspiring. It was good to hear Sasha Banks finally tell her own story and illuminate how important it is to simply take a step back sometimes.
