NXT fans were gifted a nice surprise during tonight’s episode, when NXT Superstar Kacy Catanzaro made her return.
A women’s Battle Royal to determine the no. 1 contender for an opportunity to be Rhea Ripley’s next challenger was scheduled during tonight’s episode of NXT. Whichever woman won the Battle Royal would face Rhea Ripley at NXT TakeOver: Portland.
The Battle Royal has a mix of ex-champions, NXT women’s division staples, newcomers, and even new indie signees Shotzi Blackheart and Mercedes Martinez. Perhaps the biggest surprise in the Battle Royal, however, was the return of Kacy Catanzaro.
In Aug. of last year, Catanzaro had reportedly given WWE her notice, due to an ongoing back injury she suffered on a regular basis. In Sept., it was reported that Catanzaro had departed from WWE, retiring from wrestling. Nothing was officially reported on her lack of television appearances, and her profile was moved from the active roster, to the alumni roster. At the time of the publishing of this article, Catanzaro is still not listed on the active roster.
Catanzaro didn’t last for long during the match, but the fans were happy to see the NXT Superstar back, after not performing in the ring in nearly six months. Her last match was a tag team match during a NXT Tampa show on July 19 of last year.
