WrestleMania 35

The top five women’s WrestleMania matches

4. Mickie James vs. Trish Stratus – WrestleMania 22

For many years female wrestlers were featured in multi-women matches. Mickie James vs. Trish Stratus bucked that trend as one of the few well-executed blood feuds featuring women.

Just to be clear, there is nothing wrong with multi-women matches. However, this one-on-one bout created a memorable match-up on par with the type of programs that were usually reserved for male Superstars.

For months, Stratus’ reluctant friendship with James morphed into something out of the movie, Single White Female. Trish was enjoying her sixth and most successful tenure as the WWE Women’s Champion. To date, it is the longest modern reign with the title.

Meanwhile, Mickie James was a fresh face in the women’s division and a Trish Stratus superfan. She eventually became obsessed with WWE Hall of Famer and attacked Stratus after she rejected James, which led to this showdown at WrestleMania 22.

Straight away, the physicality in this match made it stand out in comparison to other women’s matches. At some point, Stratus accidentally kicked a ring post. James took advantage of the champion’s mistake, targeting her leg for the rest of the match.

The newcomer notably won over Chicago crowd as the chants for James, who was the heel, got louder throughout the bout. Not to be deterred, Stratus mounted several comeback attempts.

However, James did her homework. She countered Status’ trademark Frankensteiner and reversed it into a nasty knee slam. Finally, she used Stratus’ own finisher, the Chick Kick, to pull off an upset and end her 448-day reign.

This match is one of the most iconic women’s matches WWE history and it minted Mickie James, who eventually became a six-time Women’s Champion.
