On the new episode of NXT, Io Shirai emerged as the new number one contender for the NXT Women’s Championship.
“The Genius of the Sky” returned on the Mar. 25 episode of NXT and replaced Xia Li in her qualifying match to earn a slot in the Number One Contender’s Ladder Match.
Tonight, she took on Chelsea Green, Mia Yim, Tegan Nox, Candice LeRae and Dakota Kai for a chance to challenge the new NXT Women’s Champion, Charlotte Flair. “The Queen” pulled off an upset on Sunday at WrestleMania 36 to dethrone Rhea Ripley.
Early on, Nox rekindled her heated rivalry with Dakota Kai. The two fought it out until the others re-entered the fray. That’s when Yim attempted to climb the ladder but Green quickly pulled her down. In response, the “HBIC” slammed a steel chair across her knee while her leg was caught in another ladder.
Then, Shirai joined the fight and ascended to the top of the ladder, but Raquel Gonzalez interfered. She tipped over the ladder, sending Io flying out of the ring to take out the rest of the field.
Later, Nox and Yim took out Gonzalez with a choke slam powerbomb combo through a table below. Green was still favoring her knee but her manager, Roger Stone, attempted to help secure the briefcase.
It looked like she would win the match until Shirai and LeRae intervened. Then, they took to the top of the ladder, where Io survive to pull down the briefcase.
So, Io Shirai is set for a first-time match-up with Charlotte Flair for the NXT Women’s Championship.
