Friday, STARDOM set the dates for the 2020 5Star Grand Prix. The company’s annual tournament will return to Korakuen Hall this fall.
The 5Star Grand Prix is a traditional round-robin tournament similar to New Japan’s G1 Climax. STARDOM takes 18 competitors and splits them up into two blocks, the Red Stars and the Blue Stars.
Each win will grant the participant two points and a draw equals one point. Of course, you don’t earn any points for a loss. The two competitors with the most points from each block will face off in a one-on-one match in the finals.
The 5Star Grand Prix has been a staple for the company since 2012. A tournament win works as a launching pad for up-and-coming stars. Some notable winners include Io Shirai, Kairi Sane, Toni Storm, and Mayu Iwatani.
The late Hana Kimura famously won last year’s tournament and went on to challenge Bea Priestley for the World of Stardom Championship.
The 2020 5Star Grand Prix will take place on Aug. 8 and 9 at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.
