NXT UK is set to relaunch on Thursday, September 17. With the days drawing nearer, WWE has announced a major NXT UK Women’s Championship match two weeks in advance.
On September 24, Kay Lee Ray will defend the NXT UK Women’s Championship against her rival Piper Niven. This will be their first in-ring meeting since April 2 when Ray teamed with Jinny to defeat Niven and Dani Luna in a tag team match. The two Scottish-born wrestlers have been engaged in a heated rivalry since before TakeOver: Blackpool II in January. It was at that event where Ray successfully defended against Niven and former champion Toni Storm.
Kay Lee Ray’s dominant reign recently passed the one-year mark. Since becoming champion, Ray has stood tall over the likes of Tegan Nox, Xia Brookside, Isla Dawn, and Mia Yim. She also conquered Storm again in a grueling “I Quit” match in February.
As for the former Mae Young Classic competitor, Piper Niven defeated Jinny and Dani Luna in singles competition before competing at her first TakeOver. Though their rivalry is heating up in time for NXT UK’s return, Ray and Niven have competed against each other for over a decade. In fact, KLR and Niven have shared the ring 66 times, but Ray has scored more wins dating back to 2009.
It remains to be seen if KLR’s longest-running reign for the women’s division will continue. Or perhaps Piper will overcome the odds and become the new face of NXT UK. The only way to find out is tune in on Thursday, September 24, at 8pm BT/3pm ET on BT Sport in the UK and the WWE Network in the US.
