To celebrate a historical year for women’s wrestling, in collaboration with Pro Wrestling Illustrated, Bell To Belles interviewed over 20 women who have ranked on this year’s PWI 500 ranking, creating the “Women of the 2021 PWI 500” Interview Series. To empower women in wrestling even more, some of the interviews were conducted by the talented women who make up wrestling media.
Jordan Blade, who ranked #398 on the PWI 500, chats with pro wrestling commentator, announcer, and host of “Let’s Get Cereal” Alyssa Marino on Jordan’s past year, experiences that have elevated her as a wrestler, representation in wrestling, and keeping balance in her life.
As a Black wrestler who also belongs to the LGBTQ+ community, Jordan was asked what representation in professional wrestling means to her, specifically. Jordan spoke highly of the Twitter Spaces fellow wrestler Suge D has held on the topic, and shares how important proper representation really is.
“It means everything,” shared Jordan. “Because when people may [say] ‘Oh hey, this person! I look up to this person, to be a wrestler.’ Or even not to be a wrestler. ‘I look up to this person because they inspire me to do my best.’ Whether my best is in wrestling or other things. We want people of color to be in that conversation. I was thinking about this yesterday, and I know for me, I also want a masculine presenting female for someone to look up to as well because that is something that is missing in wrestling, as well. I wouldn’t say missing 100-percent, but it’s definitely on the low-end of the list.”
Jordan continued by stating, “When I was a kid, when I was 12, and I got into this, I was just looking at people like Lita and Team Extreme, and John Cena, and I was like ‘Oh my goodness, they’re so great.’ And Rey Mysterio. But obviously, you know, they don’t look like me. And so I’m realizing this now, obviously as I get older, as I get deeper into wrestling, that this representation is probably one of the most important things in wrestling to have.”
