Billie Kay, Chelsea Green, and Mickie James released by WWE

Billie Kay, Chelsea Green, and Mickie James released by WWE

Earlier this afternoon, WWE announced they had “come to terms” on the release of five Superstars, including Billie Kay, Chelsea Green, and Mickie James.

WWE also stated the Superstars were released with an effective date of today, Apr. 15, 2021. The Superstars were given the typical “best in all future endeavors” wish.

Billie Kay, a fan favorite for her incredible entertainment factor, joined WWE in Apr. 2015, where she debuted as Jessie McKay on a NXT dark match in a losing effort to Bayley. Over the course of almost six years with WWE, Kay competed in 326 matches—a large majority of those as part of the tag team The IIconics. Women’s wrestling fans will always remain disappointed at the decision WWE made to dissolve the team of Kay and Peyton Royce in Aug. 2020; a team that once held the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships.

Chelsea Green joined WWE in 2018, debuting at a NXT house show in a losing effort to Deonna Purrazzo. Over the years, fans were only able to see Green in 56 matches, but shined every time she was given the chance. Green competed as entrant #16 in the 2020 Women’s Royal Rumble Match, participated in a #1 Contender’s Ladder Match at NXT TakeOver: Tampa Bay, and had debuted on SmackDown in Nov. 2020, before sustaining a wrist injury that took her out of action.

Mickie James, who ranked #12 on WWE 50 Greatest Women Superstars, debuted for WWE in Oct. 2005 as part of a famous gimmick where she played Trish Stratus’ biggest fan. In 2010, James was released by WWE as part of a decision to see the women’s division “move in a new direction”. In late 2016, James resigned with WWE, competing in numerous pay-per-views and acting as a commentator. James is a five-time former WWE Women’s Champion and former WWE Divas Champion.

All three releases come as complete shock to wrestling fans. We hope whatever opportunities they find next properly spotlight their talent and skill.
