After nearly two years, Io Shirai finally ascended to the top of the women’s division as the new NXT Women’s Championship.
“The Genius of the Sky” originally challenged Charlotte Flair for the title back in April after she won the Number One Contender’s Ladder Match. Shirai won the match via disqualification after Flair attacked her with a kendo stick.
Afterward, Rhea Ripley intervened to help her, resulting in a one-on-one match in May. “The Queen” came out and interfered, which led to the triple threat match at NXT TakeOver: In Your House.
Last night, the three faced off in a spectacular main event. All three competitors gave their all in this action-packed match that was anyone’s to win.
In one of the highlights of the night, Shirai executed an incredible diving crossbody from the top of the set. Later, Rhea landed an Avalanche Riptide on Flair resulting in a near fall.
In the end, Flair applied the Figure Eight and it looked like Ripley might tap out. Suddenly, Io Shirai hit Rhea with a moonsault to win the NXT Women’s Championship.
