Kay Lee Ray leaves TakeOver: Blackpool II still NXT UK Women’s Champ
Looks like “Toni Two Belts” was just a fantasy, after Kay Lee Ray walked away from the third NXT UK TakeOver event still a champion.
A triple-threat match for the NXT UK Women’s Championship was scheduled during today’s NXT UK TakeOver: Blackpool II, the third TakeOver event in the NXT UK brand history.
NXT UK Women’s Champion Kay Lee Ray defended her title against Piper Niven and Toni Storm. Storm appeared on NXT earlier this week, threatening to become the next double champion by winning the belt at NXT UK TakeOver: Blackpool II and the NXT Women’s Championship at Worlds Collide against Rhea Ripley.
The crowd favorite didn’t win the NXT UK Women’s belt, even after a fast-paced, high intensity match lasting 13 minutes and 57 seconds.
The three UK women’s wrestling legends have been involved in the feud building up to TakeOver: Blackpool II since late November. Storm had disappeared from NXT UK tapings after dropping the belt to Ray at NXT UK TakeOver: Cardiff, spending time at OTT and PROGRESS.
Storm returned at the Nov. 28 NXT UK television airing to attack Ray. Ray returned the attack, and Niven stepped into help Storm, who denied Niven’s help. Niven and Storm later ambushed Ray, and after the fight had cleared, Sid Scala announced the triple-threat for Blackpool II.
There’s no telling what’s next for the champ or Niven within the NXT UK women’s division. Storm will next face Ripley for the NXT Women’s Championship at WWE Worlds Collide on Jan. 25 at the Toyota Center in Houston.
