Mayu Iwatani wins Tokyo Sports’ top women’s award
Tho Tokyo Sports Puroresu Awards are the most publicized awards in Japanese professional wrestling. Tokyo Sports magazine established them in 1974. Since, they’ve become an annual tradition with a ceremony taking place in January.
This year, Iwatani won the Women’s Wrestling Grand Prize for the first time. Ice Ribbon’s Tsukasa Fujimoto was last year’s winner. Meanwhile, Io Shirai won the award three years in a row from 2015 to 2017.
It has been a big year for Mayu Iwatani. In April, she defended the Women of Honor Championship at NPJW/ROH G1 Supercard. The cross-promotional show was the first time a company other than WWE held an event at Madison Square Garden since 1960.
In June, the team known as STARS, which consists of Iwatani, Saki Kashima and Tam Nakano, regained the Artist of Stardom Championship, becoming five-time champions. Later that month, she wrestled in three matches for Pro Wrestling: EVE.
However, her biggest achievement of the year came when she made her triumphant return to singles competition to challenge Bea Priestley at STARDOM Best Of Goddess. Iwatani defeated the “Top Gaijin” to win the World Of Stardom Championship for a second time.
An unfortunate elbow injury notoriously forced Mayu to drop the title to Toni Storm in September of 2017, cutting her first reign short. So, the win at Best of Goddess symbolized a chance for redemption for the “Icon of Stardom”
Tokyo Sports will present Mayu Iwatani with the Women’s Wrestling Grand Prize next month at their annual awards ceremony.
