Sasha Banks and Bayley should shine at Extreme Rules
Tonight, WWE presents The Horror Show at Extreme Rules featuring two women’s matches.
Two of the most important matches on tonight’s card feature the Raw and Smackdown Women’s Championship with arguably four of the top active female talents in WWE in Nikki Cross, Sasha Banks, Asuka, and Bayley. All four competitors including with Alexa Bliss, who will be in Cross’ corner as she challenges Bayley for her title, have been highlights on all three shows since WrestleMania 36.
Considering her current momentum, Sasha Banks should beat Asuka for the RAW Women’s Championship. Asuka, as mentioned, has been incredible now that she shows more personality and emotion. An argument can be made that she’s more popular now than she was during her 914-day undefeated streak as a semi-silent in-ring assassin.
The main reason Banks should win over Asuka and become a five-time Raw Women’s Champion is so she and Bayley can hold all of the women’s belts. The current WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions have been the high point across all three brands. They should be given a run with all the gold. Generally speaking, there are more protagonists who can chase the antagonists right now on the women’s roster.
A title win for Sasha Banks and a long run as champion would allow Banks to successfully defend a singles championship, something she has yet to do since she left NXT. Banks and Asuka have the opportunity to have the match of the night on this show.
Banks and Bayley act a the modern-day “Two Women Power Trip”, a reference to Steve Austin and Triple H’s dual reigns in 2001. Bayley should retain her Smackdown Women’s Championship and continue her run for the last 420 out of 425 days as champion. It took her about a year to find this effective character transition from “hugger” into her “role model” hypocritical persona. It’s a great example of how it takes time to develop a strong character change.
On Oct. 11, 2019, Bayley debuted her new look when she cut off her ponytail, destroyed her inflatable tube men, and started berating the fans in her post-match promo. Bayley has been off to the races since she Charlotte Flair on that episode of SmackDown to regain her title. The match between Cross and Bayley should be solid. It’ll likely tell the story of how Bayley had to cheat to hold on to the SmackDown Women’s Championship.
Of course, there is tension between Sasha Banks and Bayley. Is there a potential split in the works? Yes, that’s clearly the end goal. For now, keep Banks and Bayley as a team and let them have all of the Women’s Championships.
