The ten best women’s SummerSlam matches
10. Glamarella (Beth Phoenix and Santino Marella) vs. Mickie James and Kofi Kingston – 2008
SummerSlam 2008 featured a “Winners Take All” intergender tag team match, the first of it’s kind at the event. The Women’s Champion, Mickie James, and the Intercontinental Champion, Kofi Kingston, faced the comedic pairing of Beth Phoenix and Santino Marella for both titles.
On the surface, this is kind of a silly throwaway match but Phoenix and James really stood out. For instance, their exchange to open the match was great. The Glamazon showcased her strength but Mickie James used her ingenuity to take her down with a pair of basement dropkicks.
Kingston had some crowd-pleasing moments in his first appearance at “The Biggest Party of the Summer,” but James dominated for most of the match. She looked to have the win in hand until Santino stepped in.
Mickie took him out with a beautiful high angle DDT, but she turned around into the Glam Slam from the legal competitor.
So, Gamarella picked up the win and became the new champions. Admittedly, Beth Pheonix has had bigger moments at SummerSlam. She survived 11 other women to become the number one contender for the Women’s Championship in 2007.
She also carried Kelly Kelly to solid match in 2011, but this was a more entertaining match.
