The Glitter Buzz: Kennedi Copeland

Grit & Glitter is the weekly podcast dedicated to the power of women’s wrestling, hosted by Harley R. Pageot, Emily Fear, and their team of correspondents known as The Glitterati. “The Glitter Buzz” is a regular feature here at Bell To Belles where Harley prompts various wrestlers to talk about the music that shapes them.

You probably get a pretty quick sense of Kennedi Copeland’s taste in music with one look at her merch.  Vermont’s hardcore daughter proudly emblazons herself on tribute tees to bands like My Chemical Romance and Yellowcard and carries that same energy into her matches, whether it’s taking on Edith Surreal and Brooke Valentine in a Wrestling Open or defending her H20 Hybrid Championship in a multi-person match in New Jersey. Before you get any ideas about facing her in a death match, though, one thing is for certain. You better makedamnsure.

A song you’d want put on a Kennedi Copeland highlight reel: Blink-182 – “Snake Charmer”

Copeland: Oh, f*ck!  Okay, so I literally read the questions and was like “Alright, I’m just going to go with the first song that pops into my head” but this one I didn’t have one. I was like “I’m going to have to mull this over” and I didn’t! I’m the worst.

PAGEOT:  Some 17-year-old girl just got into you, watches all your matches on IWTV, and says “I’m going to put together a cool three-minute video package for YouTube of the best of Kennedi Copeland.”  It’s you flying around the ring, it’s you walking down the aisle for your matches. What song does she have playing over that?

I was talking to my boyfriend about this, actually. He always wanted to make a video package to… it’s a Blink-182 song.  It’s on Neighborhoods and yes, I liked Neighborhoods. “Good girls like to sin.”  I don’t know why. I like that song too. He’s like “Yeah, I really want to do that one!” I thought about it and was like “Yeah, that would be cool” so we’re going to go with that one. That’s not my answer, it’s his answer, but it’s fine. I feel like Neighborhoods is an acquired taste for some. Especially if you’re a Blink fan, some people say it’s not real Blink, but that’s actually one of my favorite ones. I have a shite memory so I don’t actually remember what songs are called but I can hear the chorus in my head right now.

What’s your current entrance theme?

I was using “Na Na Na” by My Chemical Romance but, when I wrestled in Worcester, the sound guy still had my old pre-WWR+ theme from years ago. So, in Worcester, I come out to “Miss Murder” by AFI, which I kind of like better. But everyone else won’t let me change MCR. They’re like “No, I like it too much!”

A song about an animal: Three Days Grace – “Animal I Have Become”

Since you work in an animal shelter…

Ah!  My knee-jerk reaction is just “Animal I Have Become” by Three Days Grace. Is that too generic? Is that too broad? Listen, it’s from the WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007 soundtrack. It’s nostalgia. That’s what I’m going to go with. Three Days Grace opened for Shinedown and I got kicked out for fighting. I didn’t start it.

A Taking Back Sunday lyric you’d get tattooed on yourself: Taking Back Sunday – “MakeDamnSure”

I feel like I’m going to sound like a hypocrite but I only really know the hit singles from Taking Back Sunday, which is weird because I’ve actually seen the lead singer’s side project back in 2011. I can’t remember what it was but it was really good and I was like “Oh shit, that’s the dude from Taking Back Sunday!” I don’t know…What if I just said “MakeDamnSure”?

That’s a good wrestling tattoo.

We’ll do that, just to play it safe. I’m going to look like such a poseur, it’s going to be great. Now if this was an Alter Bridge question, I can assure you I have an Alter Bridge lyric on me. It’s “let me breathe again.” When I was getting that tattoo, my boyfriend at the time got a nosebleed and they were like “I think he’s the one who needs to breathe again.” I have several Alter Bridge tattoos actually.

A song you’d put on a mixtape for a crush: Sum 41 – “With Me”

It’s one of their slower songs and it’s so sweet! I think it’s underappreciated because it’s so cute.

“I want you to know

with everything, I won’t let this go

these words are my heart and soul

I’ll hold on to this moment, you know

as I bleed my heart out to show

and I won’t let go”

Sum 41 – “With Me”

Did he write that one about Avril?

Oh no, don’t ruin this for me. Yikes. Does it add up? It was written in 2007…Oh my god! They were married in 2006, he wrote it in 2007, and then they divorced in 2010. The timeline adds up. Oh no, I hope that song’s not soiled now.

Now we have to look up her timeline and see what songs Nickelback have written about her.

You’re going to learn a lot about me but I don’t know if you’re going to like it. There are some Nickelback songs that I like. There are some bops.

This is your heel turn.

Oh god! They’re going to be like “She doesn’t like Taking Back Sunday. She likes Nickelback. What the f*ck?” What’s the album with the car? With “Rockstar” and all that? Literally every song on that was my childhood. I’d jam out to that shit in sixth grade.

A song about water: Alter Bridge – “Waters Rising”

In honor of H20 Wrestling…

Oh, I like the correlation that you did. The first song that comes to mind is obvious for me. “Waters Rising” by Alter Bridge. There you go, I got them in after all. I didn’t mention Ghost enough, though. I love them too. They get a little shout-out. I have to, I have a Ghost tattoo as well.
