Today, The Kabuki Warriors, Asuka and Kairi Sane, defeated the Women’s Tag Team Champions, The IIconics, in a non-title match to become the new number one contenders. The match was a part of WWE’s live event at Sumo Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
The match and stipulation were revealed last week during a backstage segment on SmackDown Live. The Japanese stars’ manager, Paige, set up the opportunity.
According to the Wrestling Observer, Asuka disposed of Billie Kay with a hip attack. Then Sane hit the InSane Elbow on Peyton Royce to win, granting the team their first shot at the Women’s Tag Team Championships.
WWE hasn’t announced when the title match will take place, but this is potentially good news for the women’s tag titles, which have been languishing since WrestleMania. Hopefully, this means we could see a title defense on the next pay-per-view, Extreme Rules.
Moreover, this could mean there are plans for The Kabuki Warriors for the next few weeks. It is a little strange that they finally got to wrestle after weeks of absence on a non-televised live event. Still, it’s good to see WWE will finally give fans a payoff following their introduction during the Superstar Shake-up back in April.
