The top five women’s WrestleMania matches

5. Victoria vs. Molly Holly – WrestleMania XX

Victoria and Molly Holly‘s hair vs. title match was one of the highlights of one of the most highly-regard WrestleMania events. Incidentally, it wouldn’t have happened if Holly didn’t fight for it.

The two-time WWE Women’s Champion told DS Shin of Ring The Belle, “The writers told me that there was only room for one women’s match at WrestleMania. They were going to do a pillow fight or a mud match. I was really devastated and thought I gotta come up with something that makes them change their minds.”

“So, I put a bald cap on and had my photo taken. I made a booklet with a bunch of different storylines showing my head getting shaved. I presented it to Stephanie McMahon and some of the writers and said, ‘I’m willing to shave my head, can I please be on WrestleMania?’ ”

This led to one of the most memorable women’s matches in the history of the event with a truly unique stipulation. Luchas de Apuestas or wager matches are a storied tradition in pro wrestling but fans rarely get to see women compete in them.

Molly and Victoria’s chemistry together made this match even more of a treat. Holly had a hand in training the champion and it showed because they worked so well together.

This was a defining moment for Molly Holly even though she lost and had her head shaved in front of the crowd at Madison Square Garden.

Yes, it’s a little sad that she had to go that far to get a women’s title match on the card. But it’s a true testament to how much she believes in women’s wrestling and what she was willing to do to showcase it.
