The top five women’s WrestleMania matches

1. Charlotte Flair vs. Asuka – WrestleMania 34

On this week’s episode of Raw, WWE re-aired the SmackDown Women’s Championship match from WrestleMania 34. In the process, the showing reopened debates about its finish and the end of Asuka‘s undefeated streak.

The outcome may have been unpopular but this was objectively the most high-quality match featuring women on a WrestleMania card. It was possibly the best match at the event in 2018.

Charlotte Flair and Asuka created an instant classic. What the match lacked in a story or character development, it more than made up for in intrigue and in-ring action.

The challenger and the champion back and forth throughout. From the beginning, Asuka targeted Flair’s shoulder while Charlotte worked her opponent’s leg.

This was a first-time match-up but each competitor was well-prepared. At one point, “The Empress of Tomorrow” ingeniously countered Flair’s moonsault and transitioned into a triangle submission.

“The Queen” brought her A-game as well, delivering a beautiful Spanish Fly from the top rope. Just when we were begging for more, Charlotte abruptly retained with the Figure Eight, which she executed with one arm.

In retrospect, it seemed a little too easy to end the streak. After all, fans have seen Asuka withstand worse as NXT Women’s Champion. It also seemed odd that she graciously accepted defeat when she showed she would do anything to protect her streak in the past.

At any rate, this was an excellent match from start to finish. What do you think?
